I’m most of the way through listening to these. Wow - they are awesome!

Pastor Tim and Hemant did a great job of staying friendly even though they covered a number of topics on which they strongly disagreed. I thought they both asked excellent questions, listened to each other and gave thoughtful answers.

I liked Pastor Tim asking people not to clap when they heard something they liked because that would make it seem more like a debate and he didn’t want it to be a debate, but rather a friendly discussion.

My favorite comment so far: when Hemant said “To be devil’s advocate - actually, I guess I literally am the devil’s advocate…”

The three conversations begin similarly but then the questions asked are different; so I think it’s worth listening to the questions discussion in all of them.

Ir, were you able to listen to the entire 9 a.m. discussion? The last half hour was nothing but dead air for me. I tried it on two computers. I’m going to call our Webmaster this morning to see what the story is.

Yes, that was hilarious. Hemant is very funny and handled himself well.

Tim got a good laugh with his follow-up to the effect of “And I really don’t want you clapping if Hemant says something you like.”

I’m fairly sure I did. I listened to the Windows Media Player one after I added it to iTunes which converted it to play on my ipod. Did you try that file or the Real Player one?

Hemant is very funny and handled himself well.

Yes indeed. And Pastor Tim was very respectful to Hemant. Them both having a sense of humor helped ease the tension of having this kind of conversation.

    Yes, that was funny :)

Hey Penn State Football ~ This is the Parkview webmaster. Were you able to listen to the 9 AM service in its entirety? I didn’t hear from you, so I wondered.

I listened to the 9 AM service first via Real Player and the audio went dead at 11:10 and was dead through the end. I just loaded up Windows Player and, although I have not yet listened to it all - in skipping forward, it seems to have recorded fine.

Thanks Marty: I re-uploaded the 9 AM real player file, and it seems to be working now. Thanks for the info!

KP - is there a video of this? This is a really fabulous exchange - I am listening to the third one at this moment. This would make an incredible PBS Show by taking out the redundancy (mainly first five minutes) and edit it all together.

KP thanks for fixing the 9 a.m. Real Player file. In fact, thanks for making all the files available to us so quickly!

Hey Marty ~ We are actually working on a DVD as we speak. We’ll post it on our site when it’s available. Thanks for the suggestion about PBS ~ that might be something we’ll want to pursue.

And Ir ~ we’re really happy to be able to put these out there for everyone. It was a great weekend. I think these files show that it’s very possible to disagree strongly without being disagreeable. :-)

I really honor Tim for inviting Hemant and taking all the risks that went along with it. Although my own beliefs are different than both Tim and Hemant - my appreciation of both became emmensly high. It may be the best example of Respectful Dialogue that I have ever encountered. I got a sense that, like Jim and Hemant - Tim and Hemant came away really liking each other and both helped the other think even more deeply about what they believe.

KP - how many people cumulatively were in the three services?

I hope that you will go for national publicity. I am particularly taken with the fact that whether one chooses to believe in and follow what Tim believes or whether you choose to follow Hemant and what he believes - if we really follow either of their leads - the world will be a better place - and that is what I hope I have in common with both of them.

Marty ~ The cumulative attendance was approximately 2,800 adults. I say approximately because a number of people (myself included) felt led to come to all three services.

KP, thanks for reloading the RealPlayer version of the 9 a.m. discussion. I was busy yesterday and didn’t get a chance to call you back.

You might consider putting something in the bulletin about the MP3s being available on our Web site. I suggested this several years ago, but didn’t know it had come to fruition until reading about it on this Web site.

    Marty:

Is there a video of this?

Marty, we don’t normally do DVDs, so it may take a while. The last video was a discussion with a creation scientist that took two months to produce. Hopefully our process will be a bit more speedy this time!

One of the challenges is that the whole service is recorded, but they can’t put copywrited material (songs, videos, and some dramas) on the DVD.

We purchased a slew of new audio/video equipment when we moved to our new Worship Center in March. Hopefully our video editing and production capabilities were enhanced in the upgrade.

[...] The audio recordings of the three dialogs are now available and are well worth listening to. You can find links to them on our eBay atheist blog. [...]

These tapes are really interesting. They are both good extemporaneous speakers, both use humor well, both maintain a cordial tone - great example of a friendly discussion across a big belief gap! It took me 2 nights (with several interruptions) to listen to both, & finally - at about the 30 minute mark on the 3rd one - I heard Hemant’s “devil’s advocate” line! That was great.

Thanks for the comments so far - they’ve been really interesting to read. I’d be interested to hear more from people who were there - what did you think? What questions or points seemed particularly key? What surprised you? (Thanks!)

I talked to KP last night. She said we’re taking orders for the video and it should be produced fairly quickly. I can’t find an order form, perhaps she will post a link to the page on our Web site.
