Hemant recently mentioned Beliefnet’s “Who’s who among the godless” list.
Whether these are the right ten people for this list is something Hemant has already asked about on his blog.
Do you think Christians are equally aware of who’s who among atheists, as atheists are aware of who’s who among Christians?
(Btw I’ll be on vacation next week - have a fun week everyone!)

1You know, I wasn’t even aware of most of these people myself.
We have lame PR!

2I’m not sure that most atheists do really know who’s who among Christians. I think they probably know the loud, annoying, right-wing Christians that the media focuses on all the time (e.g. Dobson, Falwell, Robertson, LaHaye). But how many people (before coming to this site anyway) had ever heard of influential Christian leaders like Campolo, Wallis, McLaren, Wright, Bell, McManus, Boyd, Perkins, etc.? I could be wrong (hopefully those of you on this site recognize at least some of these names at this point), but it seems to me that most non-Christians are really only aware of the worst examples among us Christians (as many of us Christians are only aware of the worst examples among atheists).
I like what McLaren says about this kind of thing, and I think it’s equally applicable for both sides: “We need to stop comparing our best with the other side’s worst.”

Siamang, it does seem that way!

It certainly is unfair to do that.

4Hello,
I’d posit that atheists are not well known because that’s the nature of atheism: it’s “non-belief” and thus doesn’t lend itself to many promotions.
And here’s something truly ironic: where do you learn about the “top non-believers?” BELIEFNET!
Is an atheist with an agenda still really an atheist? I don’t know…
