I expect some of you remember Cully. He was a regular commenter on eBay atheist a few months ago; his blog is here: a child of atom. He e-mailed me this good news a couple of days ago:
I owe the OTM blogs a big thanks. Through you guys I received an offer to do a gallery show of my Subway Sketches (the ones I post regularly on my blog in case you aren’t familiar). I’m going to be headed to Houston at the end of November to show them. The funny thing is the gallery is a “faith-based” gallery owned by a church! The director of the gallery read a comment of mine, followed the links back to my blog, saw my work, and now 6 months later… here we are. It’s an awesome opportunity and I have you guys to thank for it!
You’ll be hearing more from Cully - he’s going to post a few blog entries here when he has time.

On the surface, they seem to be pictures of little details, but for some reason those little details point to ultimate things–human condition and the like. Why do you do them? What do you think draws your attention to certain people (or pieces of people)?

Congratulations! I have been “Off” Off the Map for a few months :-) I am so glad to hear this good news about you when I “come back”. So, how do you like New York? I love NYC. I’ve been there 5 times now. I kinda sense a calling from the city asking me to join in the pulse….

NCxian - Thanks! Any artist will tell you that the human form is where it’s at artistically. Even artists that work in the abstract often keep sketchbooks of realistic figure sketches. When I was in grad school I neglected my figure drawing pretty badly, because I was busy with other stuff, and after moving to the city it was part of my goals to get back on that horse. There are a lot of figure drawing groups here, and the plan was to join one of them, but time and money sort of kept me away from that. One day I realized that I had almost an hour a day (over several trips) where I was surrounded by “models.” So I started carrying a sketchbook. It was still several weeks before I actually got up the nerve to try sketching though. So… basically I do it to practice.
What draws me to specific subjects? Lots of things… proximity… LOL… really sometimes it is as simple as that. Other times it’s some weird hair thing, or the way they hold their lips, or the juxtaposition of an older person and a younger, or any of a million things. Basically if they are sitting relatively still and are in any way interesting, I’ll pull out my book.
Ester - I LOVE the city. Been here 3 years now, and I don’t really anticipate leaving any time soon.

I just added a direct link to them to the blog entry; sorry, I should have done that in the first place.

I did one really good sketch of a boulder when I was a kid. Actually, it was supposed to be a circle. OK, I’m not quite that bad, but …. I’m pretty bad!
