Great Quotes

Posted by Mike O on: 11.02.2006 /

Before I start this, I finally posted a writeup I had on “War of the Worlds” for Siamang’s blog entry. This comes from a great collection called The 60 Greatest Old-Time Radio Shows of the 20th Century. It’s a fantastic collection for anyone interested in vintage radio.

Now, on with the new topic …

The other day, my dad gave me this quote he attributed to Thomas Aquinas - “Listen to wisdom of those who agree with us, but most especially to those who don’t.”

I then found another similar quote by Frank A. Clark. “We find comfort among those who agree with us–growth among those who don’t.”

What are some other great quotes you have heard, or thoughts you have on this idea of open communication/association between atheists, Christians and everyone in between?

I like those quotes but I’m afraid I don’t have any of my own right now - I’m not very good at remembering quotes! If I run across any/think of any I’ll post them.

My brother’s significant other has just successfully gone through a number of chemo treatments for cancer and the test results show she is free of cancer.

She put together a photo ablum of her experience - which included two different writings that seemed inspirational. These were:

    What Cancer Cannot Do
    Cancer is so limited . . .
    It cannot cripple Love
    It cannot shatter Hope
    It cannot corrode Faith
    It cannot destroy Peace
    It cannot kill Friendship
    It cannot suppress Memories
    It cannot silence Courage
    It cannot invade the Soul
    It cannot steal eternal Life
    It cannot conquer the Spirit.

    and

    ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING
There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head.

“Well,” she said, “I think I’ll braid my hair today. ” So she did and she had a wonderful day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. “Hmm,” she said, “I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today.” So she did and she had a grand day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. “Well,” she said, “today I’m going to wear my hair in a ponytail.” So she did and she had a fun, fun day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed that there wasn’t a single hair on her head. “YEAH!” she exclaimed. “I don’t have to fix my hair today.

I bring more persectives now into an assessment; before coming here I had my way of analysing things and was blissfully unaware of a few blind spots. People look at me with a curious bit of horror when I say I am conversing with people who do not agree with me about God…not many people are willing to do that, they say. ’tis a shame, I say.

Here’s a good one my wife just sent me from a newsletter she subscribes to …

One of the now famous Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” There is an important Bible truth at the heart of this nugget of wisdom.

In Proverbs, we’re exhorted to “get wisdom, and in all our getting, get understanding.” Former GE chairman, Owen D. Young recognized the leadership power of understanding when he wrote: “The man who can put himself in the place of other men, who can understand the workings of their minds, need never worry about what the future has in store for him.”

My question of the day for you is, “Are you more interested in understanding, or in being understood?”

I guess I didn’t realize the Bibleyness of what I just posted until I read it just now … ignore that it’s from the bible, that’s not my point. Just look at the thought.

I came across a quote I find very uplifting yesterday:

“Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what is still possible for you to do.”
    Pope John XXIII
