Kevin sent me the following. He found the quotes he used on H.E.R.B.. Thoughts? Comments?

In addition to reading what Kevin put together I suggest you also read this post on CatE: The Myth of a Christian Nation. It presents a Christian view quite different from the view(s) expressed in the quotes below.

to anyone who thinks that atheists are “god haters” let me just say, it is impossible to hate something that you dont believe exists. there is no god. its your delusion and your forcing it on us that we hate. it is we who are under attack, the people who dont suffer from the god delusion. (thanks richard dawkins) we are under attack by the very people who claim, “there is a war on christmas”… well…. for all of you people… here it is in their own words. this is what sanity is up against.

The “wall of separation between church and state” is a metaphor based on bad history, a metaphor which has proved useless as a guide to judging. It should be frankly and explicitly abandoned.– William Rehnquist, Supreme Court

The idea that religion and politics don’t mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.– Rev. Jerry Falwell

The Constitution of the United States , for instance, is a marvelous document for self-government by the Christian people. But the minute you turn the document into the hands of non-Christian people and atheistic people they can use it to destroy the very foundation of our society. And that’s what’s been happening.–Pat Robertson

Our job is to reclaim America for Christ, whatever the cost. As the vice regents of God, we are to exercise godly dominion and influence over our neighborhoods, our schools, our government, our literature and arts, our sports arenas, our entertainment media, our news media, our scientific endeavors — in short, over every aspect and institution of human society.– D. James Kennedy, Coral Ridge Ministries and Bush advisor.

“The party should not become a constable of public opinion, but must dominate it. It must not become a servant of the masses, but their master!”
– Adolf Hitler, speaking of the nazi party

I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won’t have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!– Rev. Jerry Falwell

The Christian community has a golden opportunity to train an army of dedicated teachers who can invade the public school classrooms and use them to influence the nation for Christ.–D. James Kennedy, Coral Ridge Ministries, 1993

We’re going to bring back God and the Bible and drive the gods of secular humanism right out of the public schools of America.–Pat Buchanan, at an anti-gay rally in Des Moines , Iowa , February 11, 1996

“Universal education is the most corroding and disintegrating poison that liberalism has ever invented for its own destruction.” — Adolph hitler

Secular schools can never be tolerated because such a school has no religious instruction… and a general moral instruction without a religious foundation is built on air; consequently, all character training and religion must be derived from faith…. We need believing people.– Adolf Hitler, April 26, 1933

No, I don’t know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered as patriots. This is one nation under God.– George Bush Sr., to a reporter in 1988

The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians. –Pat Robertson

He [God] is using me, all the time, everywhere, to stand up for a biblical worldview in everything that I do and everywhere I am.– House Majority Leader Tom DeLay

“When the Christian majority takes over this country, there will be no satanic churches, no more free distribution of pornography, no more talk of rights for homosexuals. After the Christian majority takes control, pluralism will be seen as immoral and evil and the state will not permit anybody the right to practice evil.”– Gary Potter (Catholics for Christian Political Action)

“Why is this man in the White House? The majority of Americans did not vote for him. Why is he there? And I tell you this morning that he’s in the White House because God put him there for a time such as this.”–Lt Gen William Boykin, speaking of G. W. Bush, New York Times, 17 October 2003

George Bush was not elected by a majority of the voters in the United States . He was appointed by God.– Lt. Gen. William Boykin, the defense undersecretary in charge of hunting down top terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan

God gave the savior to the German people. We have faith, deep and unshakeable faith, that he was sent to us by God to save Germany.–Hermann Goering, speaking of Hitler

“A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider to be God-fearing and pious.”– Aristotle, 343 B.C.

I want you to just let a wave of intolerance wash over you. I want you to let a wave of hatred wash over you. Yes, hate is good…. Our goal is a Christian nation. We have a Biblical duty, we are called by God, to conquer this country. We don’t want equal time. We don’t want pluralism.”–Randall Terry, quoted in The News-Sentinel, Fort Wayne , Indiana , August 16, 1993

Get the few liberals out. If you don’t do it, it ain’t gonna be done. You will be doing the Lord’s work, and he will richly bless you for it.–Sen. James Inhofe, R-Oklahoma, Christian Coalition’s Road to Victory Conference, 2002, Washington D.C

“[Since 9/11] I am often asked if I still think we should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity.

The answer is: Now more than ever!” — Ann Coulter

The long-term goal of Christians in politics should be to gain exclusive control over the franchise. Those who refuse to submit publicly to the eternal sanctions of God by submitting to His Church’s public marks of the covenant - baptism and holy communion - must be denied citizenship. This is God’s world, not Satan’s. Christians are the lawful heirs, not non-Christians.”– Gary North (Institute for Christian Economics)

“Those who control what young people are taught, and what they experience - what they see, hear, think, and believe - will determine the future course for the nation.” — James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family

I think it’s this kind of extremism that fueled last year’s mid-term election results and what seems to have become a persistent turn against conservatism in the mainstream of U.S. politics.

But the American electorate tends to be pretty fickle. Unfortunately, I think a retreat into right-wing militarism and religious domination could easily result if (when?) there’s another terror attack in the U.S.

I don’t think this kind of stridency is in keeping with the tone of the ebay atheist discussion, Kevin.

I think posts like this belong on the discussion board, if at all here on off the map.

I don’t see anything here other than an intent to provoke.

Hey Kevin if you really believe this stuff I’m more scared of you than the Christians you quoted!

Do you really believe what you just wrote said or were you just trying to get more reaction to your post?

Siamang is right - we want to avoid being this provocative on here. But you’re welcome to discuss your concerns with us.

we are all just monkeys with car keys… superstitious monkeys cringing under a dark star lit sky…in fear of a universe we cant understand… inventing deities and rituals to appease those deities. its sad really.

“We are a nation that is unenlightened because of religion. I think religion stops people from thinking. I think it justified crazies. I think flying planes into a building was a faith-based initiative. I think religion is a neurological disorder.”
–Bill Maher, fired from ABC for telling the truth

i agree with bill… belief in a deity is a mental disorder and legally should be treated as such. time to end the insanity.

imagine there’s no heaven, its easy if you try.
no hell below us, above us only sky.

ill take care of your dog mike… im an atheist, not a bad person. and i didnt say they should be imprisoned…. just declared delusional. and not allowed to vote. people who believe in that fairy tale gave us GEORGE BUSH. those people who believe in the “sanctity of life” have given us… a quarter million dead in iraq…. 3200 of our own soldiers dead… untold thousands wounded. and they voted for him about abortion… THATS why delusional people shouldnt be allowed to vote. sanctity of life….what a crock.

helen… delusionalism is a symptom of a mental disorder.

why would an all knowing all seeing deity, need to make little teeny tiny little human beings to worship it?? and then…. if that flawed human being (created flawed by god on purpose) succumbed to temptations or didnt worship in just exactly the way some fat hick preacher with a bad hairdoo said they should.. or some child molesting priestophile told them they should, then that deity would BURN THEM FOR EVER??? in effect PUNISHING THEM for ITS MISTAKE (making them flawed instead of perfect in the first place)… then … that isnt any kind of deity id like to hang out with…that sounds like some manipulative, controlling posessive, stalker type deity and id try to kill it if i could…i certainly wouldnt want to be part of it…. and i certainly dont want to be surrounded by people like jimmy swaggart, george bush, and jerry falwell for eternity…

This is in response to Kevin’s comments:

I think it’s a HUGE leap between the opinions expressed by Bill Maher and the idea that religious people should be treated as mentally unfit. Nutty? Yes. But deserving of segregation, discrimination and persecution? Absolutely not, under any circumstances.

It’s SO important that all of these things must be seen as a cycle. Think of it kind of like child abuse. It continues until someone in a family figures out a better way of doing things. It continues when our reaction to the problem is to hit back harder than we were hit.

The way I see it is that the religious people of this world are the acting parents and we can choose to hit back or we can choose to never, ever do it to the next generation.

That’s not to say we shouldn’t be harsh when confronted or oppressed. We should. But to do to them as they did to us would not only be the wrong choice, but would ironically be quite biblical.

    Thanks for your comments, ilk.

I think you nailed it when you said, the solution is to think of a better way to do things, rather than hitting back harder than we were hit.

Some people would say Jesus proposed a better way of doing things than the Old Testament “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” when he said (according to the Bible) “Turn the other cheek”. Although if that is taken to mean “always be passive”, I’m not sure that’s right either.

And some people would say that the Old Testament principle was actually intended to have the good effect of restraining people from hitting back harder than they were hit - the point was “It’s wrong to exact more than was taken from you”. In other words they see it as a step in the right direction.

One which perhaps was not exclusively taken by the people self-identified as Jews - I seem to recall that the Mosaic Law has similarities to the Code of Hammurabi, for example? - but my knowledge of such things is very sketchy and vague.
