There hasn’t been any active discussion on the discussion board for a while so we decided to close it to new posts and comments.
Everything posted on it is still there.
The point of closing it is not to restrict discussion but rather to prevent new people posting there hoping for responses and being disappointed they don’t get any.
If you have something you’d like to discuss you’re welcome to e-mail it to us on the feedback form as a suggested post for this blog.

2Closing it to new comments seems like the right thing to do now, but I can’t help but feel a pang.
I really enjoyed interacting with people on the Discussion Board, getting to know them, exchanging ideas, learning how differently people can view a topic and how different people’s reactions can be, having people share answers I’d never dreamed of to my questions, and (yes) even sometimes having heated arguments.
Thanks for having set it up & let it run essentially without moderation. And, thanks to everyone reading this who participated in discussions there - I think of you fondly!

3Thanks Eliza.
I understand how you feel.

4The discussion board was/is my single favorite place on the net. Glad to hear that all the content will still be protected … I go back and relearn old lessons every now and then. Thanks for making it happen, guys. I’m eternally grateful.

5Eliza,
I couldn’t agree with your sentiments more. Thanks for all your words on the discussion board. Corresponding there was a special experience.

6The end of an era! :-)
I would say that it was highly unusual for an unmoderated group to persist for so long, at such high levels of participation and serious discourse, and remain (fairly) civil. Quite an accomplishment for OTM.

7My employer would rejoice about its demise if they knew how much time I spent there.
I continue to miss some of the people who posted there who have gone on to other things (TXatheist and David spring to mind). I learned a great deal from everyone there.
I would propose a moment of silent reflection, but Helen might get upset about it.

Go for it, Stephan. A moment of silent reflection seems like an appropriate way to recognize, as Karen said, ‘the end of an era’!
The discussion board meant a lot to me too even though once I was blog manager I didn’t have time to get over there a whole lot.

9Helen, I’m glad you got the joke. Sometimes I write things like that and people think I’m serious. I was hoping you knew me well enough by now, and I was not disappointed.

10Just when I was thinking of returning to the fray. Ah well there you go. Best wishes to you all

11Stephan, yes, I realized you were teasing me :)
Chris, you wouldn’t have found any fray to return to on the discussion board.
You’re welcome to join in the conversations on this blog anytime you like.

12I feel a pang too…I’d never thought so hard or weighed my words so carefully before. I think the year or so I spent almost addicted to the DB was one of the most mind expanding things I’ve participated in. I also think of the group fondly, and am glad the content is protected.
