Tony Romo Takes Homeless Man To Movies

An inspirational story:

The Dallas Morning News reported on Wednesday that the Cowboys quarterback took a homeless man to the movies recently.

The man, who goes by Doc, was outside a theater in in Dallas when a man came up and offered to pay his way to see a movie. Planning on passing out fliers for a consignment store across the street, Doc declined. But then he realized that he had just turned down Romo.

He ran across the street, asked for the day off and ran back to the theater. Romo and Doc ended up sitting together watching the movie “Role Model.” Doc told the newspaper that he informed Romo that he hadn’t showered in days.

“Don’t worry about that,” Romo said, according to the newspaper. “I’m used to locker rooms.”

“For me, it was a blessing,” Doc said. “It came at just the right time. It gave me some encouragement and faith in mankind. I just wanted to say thank you.”

This is challenging to me. I want to start doing more stuff like this. Awesome!

Neat - thanks for sharing this, Bill. I want to do more stuff like this too!

Just a reminder: we post stories of ordinary people doing things like this on our Doable Evangelism blog, under OA stories.

Randy, the director of Doable Evangelism, does them too as well as helping encourage others to do them. Here’s one of his that I thought was very powerful:

I love that Romo took him WITH him to the movie. I might have given the guy a ticket and been on my way, but sitting with the guy…who hadn’t showered…for a whole movie? Wow. Sounds a lot like something Jesus would do. Thanks for the story.

It’s easy to give a couple dollars/pounds, but it’s not so easy to give a couple hours.

I don’t know if it’s just an American thing or what, but it seems like people just don’t have time for people any more. I applaud Romo’s willingness to spend time. Even if he was going to the movie anyway, which he probably was, it was *his* time, and he gave it to Doc.
